THE GOLDEN TEE SOUTHERN CLASSIC IV |
4th
Annual Southern Classic
Andy Haas Wins Largest Player-Run Tournament of Year
Theres more video golf news this fall than just the Golden Tee World
Championship. The 4th Annual Golden Tee Southern Classic was held in
Marietta, Georgia in conjunction with the Team USA qualifier October
15th-16th.
87 Golden Tee players made the pilgrimage to Mazzys Sports Bar and Grille
in Marietta to compete in what ended up being the largest player-run
Golden Tee LIVE event of the year! For the fourth straight year, local
players Wade Kids and Dutch Williams directed the tournament and did a
phenomenal job planning the event.
A prize pool of nearly $20,000 was generated through player entry fees and
coin-drop from the games throughout the weekend, along with a $2,000
donation from Mazzys and a $5,000 contribution from Incredible
Technologies.
The event kicked-off Friday night with a high-stakes closest-to-the-pin
competition sponsored by Incredible Technologies. Tony Johnson of
Minneapolis won the contest and took home a $250 Golden Tee LIVE gift card
for his performance. Sean Gervais of Tampa won a $150 gift card for being
runner-up. Graig Kinzler of Schaumburg, IL received $100 gift card for
third place and Bob Niehaus of Rockford, IL won $50 for fourth.
The closest-to-the-pin action was followed by a scotch-doubles tournament
that has become a tradition at many player-run live events. The team of
Sonu Khatri of Dayton, OH and Will Sandstad of Minneapolis took 1st place
and a $500 prize.
The Southern Classic took a break on Saturday afternoon when Incredible
Technologies conducted their 2005 Team USA qualifier.
After the qualification ended early Saturday evening, the Southern Classic
54-hole qualifier began. Players competed on Kangaroo Trail, Whispering
Valley and Heather Pointe with the lowest 32-scores making the cut for
Sundays double-elimination tournament.

The
32-man double-elimination tournament began Sunday morning and the players
were welcomed by a breakfast buffet from Mazzys. Everyone who made the
cut was guaranteed a cash prize, but each player was gunning for the
$4,000 winners check.
The bracket was brimming with big-name GT stars, including past National
Champions, World Champions, GT All Stars, Players of the Year and GT
Society members. It was a veritable whos who of Golden Tee.
Andy Haas of Stow, OH proved once again that he is the hottest player on
the planet as he bulldozed his way through the championship bracket. Andy
defeated 2004 World Champion Jeff Harlow of Florissant, MO in the
semi-final round to send him to the losers bracket where he wound up
facing his hometown pal, Jimmy Parker, of St. Louis.
Jeff defeated Jimmy to get a second crack at Haas in the finals.
Jeff defeated Andy in the first match forcing a final deciding game to
determine the recipient of the $4,000 check. But after a bizarre
unfortunate incident on the first tee the game - when Jeffs ball hit a
tiki torch and caromed into the outback of Kangaroo Trail - Andy went on
to defeat the champ for a second time and take the 2005 Golden Tee
Southern Classic!
Andy received a $4,000 prize for his efforts and Jeff went home with
$2,500 in his pocket. Check out the final results below!
