Though prior to the tournament the rules clearly stated that it takes 24.5 points to win the Cup, the idea of a draw being called at the prestigious event proved unacceptable for many of the competitors. Some called it controversy, others called it chaos but reality found 32 of the world's most serious Golden Tee competitors looking for closure after an emotionally charged and exhausting event. In the heat of the moment, tournament director Gary Colabuono decided to give the team captains an opportunity to settle the score the best way they see fit. "The rules are clear but we want to be fair to the competition," he said. "We gave the captains a chance to contend so that none of the competitors would feel slighted."
After hectic deliberation, Chris Eversole made the tough decision that Team USA would agree to stick to the rules and call it a draw.
"A tie is a victory in my eyes," he said. "[Team USA] wasn't even supposed to be this close and our guys fought too hard to change
any rules at the last minute. I can't say enough how incredibly World Team co-captain, Enzo Polidori, saw the situation differently than Eversole. "I understand we're sticking to the Ryder Cup rules, but in this case it would have been best to determine a clear winner," he explained. "Our guys have come so far to compete for the Cup and it's a shame for it to end in a draw. Either way, I respect [Chris Eversole's] decision. He's an outstanding competitor and a great captain. They played great today." Though the contest ended in a 24-24 draw, the World Championship Cup remains on the soil of the reigning champions, Team USA, marking a fourth time for the Americans. No asterisk will be necessary in the history books, the score alone will tell the tale of one of the greatest team competitions ever held.
